I was a pilot with Bomber Command towards the end of the war flying Lancasters. The last big one I did was De Berchtesgaden. They thought that Hitler was going to leave Berlin and go to his chalet at De Berchtesgaden because there had been a big increase in the people, so we bombed all the SS barracks there.

And after that the next interesting one, a lot of people don鈥檛 know this, was dropping food supplies to Dutch civilians. Although the Germans had been marooned up in North West Holland there was an acute shortage of food for the Dutch. Bomber command Lancasters had food instead of bombs in the bomb bays and flew in at very low speed to drop the supplies to them.

The Germans said they wouldn鈥檛 shoot, but the war was still on and we were a bit worried about that. Coming in low and slow we could have been a sitting target, but they kept their word and here we are. Those were the last official ones I did before the end of the war in 1945.
