I was born in 1934. I remember in about 1942/43 I was walking along the middle of the road. You did in those days as there was so little traffic. A Messerschmitt came over firing its machine guns. The bullets were bouncing off the roofs all around me. I ran home to tell my mum as happy as could be. What an adventure! My mum wasn鈥檛 quite as pleased as I had been!

I can remember during the raids we sometimes went to a large communal shelter. This could fit hundreds in. We used to sit in there singing songs etc. I always felt we had a good time when we went there.

The war was always exciting for me. I don鈥檛 remember ever having been scared.
