In May 1943 I volunteered to join the Army. I was accepted to the Royal Armoured Corps and trained at Bovington Camp in Dorset. After training I was posted to East Anglia to join the 1st Lothians and Border Yeomanry with whom I went to Normandy. In Normandy I was a wireless operator in a mine clearing tank. At the end of the war in Europe I returned to the UK to attend Officer Cadet Training in Kent, from there I was sent to complete my officer training in Bangalore, India. I then joined the Seaforth Highlanders in Malaya and Singapore where I stayed until September 1947 when I came home to the UK for demobilisation. After this I joined the Territorial Army and served in the Cameronians and also the Royal West Kents.
