On December 20th, 1943 a Spitfire crashed on the farm, Father and the workmen went to see what had happened or whether anyone was living. They saw this pilot crawl out of the cockpit, he was drawing his revolver. They said something in English and he was so pleased to see he had landed on friendly territory. We learnt many years later that he was on reconnaissance for the D-Day landings and he got shot and lost petrol and lost communications, he crash landed on our farm. Fifty years to the day later he came back to Trewen and visited the farm. It gave me great pleasure to meet him. He was supposed to spend the Christmas in Malta with his wife but could not because of ill health so they came down to Falmouth and came out to Trewen to see where he had landed fifty years later to the day. Radio Cornwall recorded his visit to the crash site.
