This story was submitted to the People's War website by GMR ACTION DESK on behalf of Ron Collinge and has been added to the site with his permission.
After training I joined the east coast convoys and then went to Liverpool for trips on the North Atlantic convoys to America and Canada returning to Liverpool or other UK ports. Many ships were lost and 1942 was a desperate time. For the invasion I joined a troop ship the SS Longford to take troops to the Beaches then to ports as they opened up. After the breakthrough I joined the cruiser HMS Berwick and was disembarked at Ceylon { Colombo and Trinomcalee} for Japan convoy work but thank God they dropped the bomb.
The ships we sailed on convoy were merchant men. The loss of their men was immense.
