My grandma was 15 years old when the war started. She was needed at home when the War was on so she left school to help at the farm that she lived at. A little bit into the War, she was sent to shorthand school, and by doing this she got a good job in an office where she worked from 1:30 to 5:45 each day doing book-keeping.
She also joined the National Fire Service, she was on the phones, and she also had to learn how to work the hoses, pumps and other equipment.
British planes went over regularly to get to Germany. German planes also flew over a lot, they were looking for the ammunitions factory, "Drigg," and the iron ore mine, which was nearby where my Grandma lived.
My Grandma also had two brothers.
The eldest one, Jim, was called up to the army as soon as the war started, before the war started he was a bank clerk. He was called up to the RASC, (Royal Army Service Core). Jim was the Sergeant Major. He was sent abroad, and later in the war he was stationed at Dunkirk, and participated in "The Battle Of Dunkirk." After the war had finished he went back to being a bank clerk and retired as the bank manager.
Chris, (13) joined Technical School, and became a metallurgist. He was called into the army, and because he was good with languages, he became a translator for the prisoners of war.
Joe, (11) was at a grammar school he did not go to the war because he was needed at the farm.
My Grandad had a medical test to see if he was fit for the war and passed, but soon after he had his medical test, his appendix burst. While having injections to help him, the needle severed nerves in his arm, and his arm was paralysed for 12 months, stopping him from going to war.
