D-day, 6th June 1944, Juno Beach, 7am.
On the day we landed about quarter of a mile from the beach. I remember seeing the houses burn't from the shells. We soldiers passed a rocket boat and I remember it firing two rockets and machine gun bullets making holes in the sand. I still remember the noise and the fealing of fear, we were all scared and I was aged 21 at the time.
The French regiment were encouraged to fight by la Chanelier. The English also went in to fight and the Germans took fright and left.
I remember passing a Canadian soldier who had been shot on the railway line. In his hand he was holding a photo of his wife and child. I tried to take his bag from him to make him feel more comfortable, but then thought someone might think I was stealing it.
I make sure I go back to Juno Beach every year in June to pay my respects to the 9,000 soldiers who died.
