I was in the Royal Army Medical Corps. based in India when war broke out. I was immediately transferred to Austria, where I looked after the sick, injured and wounded in field hospitals. I was also expected to serve meals to the Officers in the Officers Mess.
When I returned to England I was based at Aldershot Barracks, again caring for those soldiers sent home injured. I married in 1942, most people seemed to marry quickly and hastily then, I think it was because of the situation we were in, you never knew wether you would see each other again.
In 1948 I was demobilised from the Services. I was given my 'de-mob' suit, and thought I looked like 'the bees knees.' However all the other de-mobbed servicemen were given suits also, and for many their suit was the only clothing they possessed. There were so many well dressed men all desperately 'hard up.'
