During the siege of Malta in 1940 to 44 I was serving in the Royal Artilery, anti aircraft Bofors gunnery, as a member of a gun crew on a gun site located in the area of Saffi Strip which is part of the present day civil airport.
A comrade and I were detailed to trace the telephone line between our gun site and troop HQ which had been danaged during an air raid. The task involved scrambling over Maltese farm land (areas of soil retained by a web of dry-stone walls).
As we negotiated one of the walls we encounted a large unexploded bomd.

Giving the area of the bomb a wide berth we located the telephone cable some distance beyond the bomb and assessed the damage to the cable, connecting a telephone hand-set we were carrying we contacted troop HQ to report the restoration of the telephone contact and informed them of the unexploded bomb and it's location.

Troop HQ politley instructed us to continue on to HQ pick up a red flag and erect it close to the bomb on our return to our gun site which we did.

During the event we came across sone Maltese citizens. I shouted " BOMBI BOMBI" and indicated where the bomb was, they fled across some fields
