I lived with my Mum and my Granny whilst my Dad was at war. It was my third birthday and my mum had saved all her rations to throw a party for me.
The table was laid and six of my friends from the area had just arrived to celebrate with me. We were in the lounge of our house when we heard a wailing sound coming from above.
My mother pulled all of us out of the lounge and pushed us up against the sink in the kitchen. A doodlebug then landed next to the house. The Welsh dresser flew towards us, trapping us next to the sink and the back door blew off its hinges, landing on my mother and breaking her arm.
The worst news however, was the fact that the beautifully laid table, ready for the party was destroyed as the force of the blast had smashed the French windows all over the table. I remember being completely bewildered but more upset at the fact I was not going to be able to celebrate my birthday.
