I was a driver in RASC at the age of 17 in Libya. Tubruk had been very badly bombed. We were on our way from Alexandria to Baugazi- we went over the hill, down the valley, and when I looked up I saw what I took to be snow on the hills, but turned out to be war graves, rows and rows.
Then there was VE day, but we didn’t know. We continued on, and about a week later the Officer in charge told us that there had been VE Day — we all jumped for joy, but we were informed that we were not going home. we had another two years to do, so there was no celebration for us.
