Deal Station — The day the train wheel came through the house
I was 6 years old and my home in Albert Street was very close to the station. One day Father came home from work while we were having breakfast. An air raid was on and he decided not to go to bed because the air raid was heavy and within 30 minutes there was an almighty bang and we realised that a train wheel had landed on the house and it pushed Mum and Dad’s double bed through the ceiling below into the front room. We were under the kitchen table for protection, none of us was injured. We had to move to an Aunt’s house nearby and eventually moved away to Ashford.
