Another account of my memories of WW2 is my shipwreck episode on the Charles H Salter, which was a Canadian ship.

It was on the 28th November 1945 I sailed from Liverpool to Reykjavik Iceland and crossing the North Sea the weather was very rough. As we got near the coast off Iceland it got worse.

I was on the helm at midnight and at four o' clock I passed over the helm to another man.

This meant I could go down to my cabin for a well-earned rest. I had only been there a short time when there was a big bump!

I realised something had happened!
I went up to the boat deck where the rest of the crew were, it was still dark and I found we had run aground!

We got a rocket line from the coast, which we attached to another thick line and then,
we attached a sort of chair onto that line and one by one we were rescued.

Then we had a nice free holiday in Reykjavik, until we got a ship back home.
