This story was submitted to the People,s war site by Wendy Young on behalf of Mrs A Roberts and has been added to the site with her permission she fully understands the site,s terms and conditions.

The boy I was going out with joined the airforce and was killed while bombing Germany.
I joined the WAAFs as I wanted to become a wireless operator air gunner; but unfortunately, they would not take women air gunners. So I decided to become a wireless operator.
Before I joined up I learnt the morse code, went for an interview and was accepted. I went to Compton Basset for six months training, and passed to become a fully qualified wireless operator.
The Wing Commander asked to see me, and said he'd like me to join the Y service.
Now the Y service was a secret service. The public didn't know anything about it. So I couldn't tell my parents what I was doing.
I was sent down to Chick Sands Priory and was put on to sets, tuning into Germany, listening to messages coming over the air, one had to listen very hard becaus some of the signals were very faint, sometimes they were under loud music. The morse code which I took down was sent to Bletchley to be decoded. It was very concentrated.
I did this till the end of the war, then I was demobbed.
