This story was submitted to the People's War website by Plymouth Library Services on behalf of Margaret Morby. The author fully understands the terms and conditions of the website.

I joined the Land Army in 1939, at the outbreak of the war, and spent the duration of the war based in Exeter, where I worked on a farm.

I particularly remember hay-making time. I didn't like heights, and so couldn't climb on top of the haystacks, like everyone else.

I would stand at the bottom of the stacks, and the bundles of hay were thrown down to me. I would then carry the bundles of hay to the barn where they were stored.

I was in the Land Army for six years.
