The Radio was the main link with the outside world. Adults and children would sit quietly and listen to the NEWS every day on the 大象传媒 The news reader always gave his name, and we tried to guess which of the readers it was, Bruce Belfrige. Frank Phillips, and I think Wilfred Pickles? There must have been more?
One programme I think it was at 6.50 -7AM each morning.KEEP FIT we all had to be ready to do the exercises ,before breakfast and getting off to school.
The RADIO DOCTOR would give us hints during his 5 minute chat, but always finished with "MAKE SURE THE BOWELS ARE WELL OPEN" obviously the reason we all kept fit and well. BUT WHAT WAS HIS NAME?
Do hope someone will remember and tell me? Katie Smith (Rimmer)

Message 1 - Radio doctor

Posted on: 24 October 2003 by paul gill - WW2 Site Helper

It was Charles Hill. I was born the month the NHS started and Ian Hyslop's excellent anniversary documentary said that Hill was passionately against it as he felt the state shouldn't interfere in the doctor-patient relationship!!
About links

gives some details of Hill's talks.

Alvar Lidell was the newsreader I most remember as a child.
About links

has pictures and the reason why announcers lost their anonymity. Pickles was the first reader with a regional accent, much harder for an enemy to imitate!

Thanks Paul of course it was Charles Hill, also thanks for the other interesting links The news readers name's site was fascinating many names that had been long forgotten. I could almost hear their voices delivering sometimes awful, but sometimes news that was hopeful in those sad years.

I was very interested to read your 'radio' memories! I think the radio doctor was Dr. Charles Hill - I may be wrog but that name came as I read your article. I certainly remember his gravelly voice. I like to reply to memories which somehow relate to mine - its also encouraging to know that our memories are read. You might be interested to read my two pages on the 大象传媒 in World War 2.
