My uncle Allen Cooper was awarded the Polish Gilder Cross of Merit, it took him 30 years to receive this medal as most of his work was secret. During the 1944 battle the Germans had pinpointed the sources of radio signals and wiped them out, Allen was working with the 77th Highland Field Artillery and was the one that got away, but only just. The Germans had killed most of the 200 company, many died instantly others was executed if still alive, Allen and 2 others were kicked to see if they were dead, they managed to convince the Germans they was. On May 11th 1944 the Polish 2nd crops began the battle for Cassino Allen was assigned to them, he was used to keep the front line and headquarters in touch despite many attempts to silence him. Six crack panzer paratroopers set out to find and kill him, and blow up a nearby bridge. He was warned of by an intelligence officer, he managed to maintain radio contact and despite there attempts the Germans never got him, he was called the Phantom by the Germans as he was seen all over on different fronts, but to his comrades he was called Bambino as he looked very young for his age. Im very proud of my uncle and the work he did in WW2, a lot of things he still cant talk about as he classes them as secret still. Its a pity that he was recognised by the Polish Army as a Hero but never the British as most of his work was of paper
