As D-Day approached the plan was formed to put 5 radio trucks ashore in France to form a secure communications base. First to go was to be the armoured truck with a crew of 4 lead by a sergeant. As with the best laid plans of men and mice, on the evening of D-Day the armoured truck was called for but the cranes on the ship carrying them were not strong enough to lift the armoured truckso next in line was sent instead. This was Dad's truck with a crew of three led by a corporal, who turned out to be the senior Signals NCO ashore for the next two or three days. He says that they suddenly acquired very long leads from the van to their Morse Keys and very deep trenches!
