In my memories of long ago
I recall the harvester at the plough
The hot sun ablaze
In the childhood summertime
The horses like statues
On the brow of the hill
Not Barn Hill but, close by
The yellow corn shone in the sunlight
In the rural times of N.W.9
The yellow corn afire with energy and life
In the springtime the cattle were thick
By the school gate
Calling and grunting playing together
Pressed on both sides awaiting their feeding
Lively and milling, majestic and pressed
The Fryent Farm in those rural days
Of childhood
As the European War drew to a close
Was bereft of machinery
Traditional and historic
As the life of the farmer had been
Throughout time
Yellow corn grazing cattle
And the harvester
With his foot to the plough
