I was 5 in 1939. We moved to Coventry in 1941 just after the main blitz on Coventry. My grandfather was at Armstrong Siddley works at 65 years old and he earned more then he ever had as a Methodist pastor. They were testing jet engines in the works, and the noise of the engines was on 24 hours a day. I 鈥渉eard鈥 stories that people had died by being sucked into the jet engines! We used to collect shrapnel from the raids the next morning on the way to school. If a night raid went on into the morning we were allowed time off school that morning. We used to share a concrete shelter in the neighbours garden. We could hear shells and shrapnel landing on the roofing of the shelter. When we stayed with families in Ledbury an air raid siren went off and only I and grandma got up because the others weren鈥檛 used to the sirens and wondered why we had got up.
