I started working for the ARP in 1943. We had to turn out when there was an air raid even when it was in London which was 30 miles away. There were two messengers, a young lad and myself. We had to report to the local banana ripening room with our bycycles and go into the gas room wearing masks just in case. We had to take our own bicycles. Sometimes we could be out all night up to five or six hours, but it became just an every day occurence. The American doolittle's commander was billeted at the girls school in High Wycombe and on the other side was bomber command at Naphill, the planes used to follow the Thames up towards us from London, but heavy bombing missed us mainly because we are in a valley. Lord Haw Haw used to mention us quite frequently by saying I know you're there High Wycombe (the sleepy town of High Wycombe) and it was public knowledge that all the americans were based there.
