My father, Gunnar Gaasland, born in 1914, was in the Norwegian Army, stationed in Scotland during the war. He was there from January 1942 until the end of the war.
Unfortunately, he died in 1972, and when he was still alive I never thought of all his stories one day becoming important history, - and am of course sorry I never took more notice, and made him write down a lot of what he experienced during this important period of his life.
I know he was stationed several places in Scotland, up north in Sutherland, and later in Callander. That's also where he met my mother, Fay McKiggan, and married her on 16th May 1945 at St. Kessog's Church in Callander. As there were few work opportunities for my dad in Scotland just after the war, he brought his bride over to OSlo in Norway, where they remained married until he died. By then my mum was too settled in Norway, to move back home again.
My mum's brother, Hugh McKiggan, died in action in Crete. His name is up on the memorial stone in the square of Callander.
I've always felt very deeply about my Scottish inheritance, and have been returning to Scotland and Callander for holidays all my life.
I would be so greatful for any information at all, especially about the period in Callander where so many of the Norwegians were stationed.
Please write back to me here!
