I loved and treasured my sweet coupons,as I had a very sweet tooth, my Mother kept my tokens for me, I kept my weekly supply until the week-end.
I spent my tokens at our local sweet shop
situated on Wallsend Road, near the Pineapple Inn.
We were allowed two ounces of sweets for the 'E' coupon and four ounces for the 'D' coupon.
Maybe if we were still rationed for sweets it would be a help to me, as I still have my sweet tooth.
Sweets were rationed because of sugar shortage, due to restriction on imports.
Although everyone was allocated so much sugar, our family occasionally had some left by the time our allocation was due, so if there was 1lb (half a kg) I went with my two older sisters, to exchange our sugar for sweets. We did this at a shop owned by Welchs Confectioners, the shop was in Grey Street, North Shields.
After waiting in a queue for what seemed an age, we were happy to go home with our supply of boiled sweets. Mmmm.
