My grandad Arthur Shaw fought in world war 2 from the tender age of 19 . He started out in North Africa went on to Egypt, Lybia and Tunisia , he was part of the east Yorkshire regiment 7th armoured division.
After fighting the battles of Al Alamein and Turbrook he went on to Italy to the Sicily Invasion (Anzio) .He went on to play his part in the D Day Normandy landings on sword beach where he can still remember his fear at never returning home as he had seen most of his fellow army pals die as they hit the beaches.
He came in on the second wave on to Sword Beach where he had to battle to stay alive as the troops where getting shot at heavily as they came in off the boats.
He remembers having to get straight down to digging trenches to cover from heavy shelling that was going on . He was very tired and very frightened for his life , but in his own words that was his job and he was there to fight for his country no matter what the cost.
He managed to survive and go all the way through Europe to Germany and I'm happy to say back to his family where he is still now at the grand age of 85.
I enclose a picture that was taken on D Day on Sword Beach as the troops where landing and I am proud to say that my grandad is pictured in the bottom left hand corner. The picture was taken by a war time photographer named Cecil Beaton and it captures the landings in all its glory, so I'm proud to make a toast to my grandad so this is for you my hero ! For fighting for the freedom I have today. Here's to you Arthur "TIGER" Shaw - we will always be proud of you and all those who fought along side of you.
