This story was submitted to the Peoples War Site on behalf of Josie Nally and has been added to the site with her permission...
Josie was born in 1934, so has some childhood memories of the war. She was an only child until she got a sister at the age of ten.
She moved to Hull at the age of three and can remember the bombs dropping and going into the air raid shelter until the bombs stopped. She said it was very dark and frightening in there as you didn't know what was going on outside during the air raid. It was very crowded and there were seats to sit on, you passed the time talking or singing.
She also remembers ration books and there being no sweets. Food was scarce and she was sent down to the chip shop for scraps, which cost one penny. A loaf of bread was five pence
