'Don't get yourselves in a mess' said Mum 'I'll just finish getting ready.'
I looked at the photo on the mantlepiece and thought of my Daddy waiting at the railway station. I didn't know him but had written to him in the prisoner of war camp in Germany and was looking forward to seeing him.
'Somebody at the door, Michael.' 'You answer it,' said my brother. So I went to the front door and opened it. A man stood there with a bag.'Hello Jill' he said,'where is your Mummy?'. I mumbled that she was upstairs and that we we going to the station to meet my Daddy but he had already pushed past me and bounded up the stairs.
I was horrified and told my brother of the man who'd gone upstairs. We stood silently, apprehensively at the foot of the stairs and waited and listened with held breath.
'Oh Bill': ''Oh Vi'. I was amazed to hear this and looked to my brother for an explanation. He, with the superiority of one year, one month in age, assuaged fears and mysteries with the words - 'It's Daddy!'.
I resisted the notion with all my being and then my Mum came downstairs arm in arm with the man. Maybe if I'd met him at the station????
