One could say this sounds like a fable
But once upon a time - I met Clarke Gable
Star of Hollywood's Silver Screen
Star struck I know - but I was only sixteen
We girls got together 鈥 as all young girls would
When we heard he was visiting 鈥楤urtonwood鈥
Vaseline鈥檇 our eyes 鈥 tanned our legs like you鈥檇 never seen
Well as I say 鈥 we were only sixteen
The journey by train steamed mile after mile
We reckoned that way we travelled in style
Then walked country lanes and fields so green
Chattering like 鈥 birds when you鈥檙e only sixteen
Such excitement when he came into view
Tall and handsome this idol we knew
We acted like we were all part of a scene
I鈥檓 sure he knew we were only sixteen
鈥淗i girls鈥 he said 鈥 his voice rich and deep
His 鈥榦dol鈥 smile caressed his cheek
With a uniform that fitted just like a dream
What could we say 鈥 hey 鈥 we were only sixteen
Nowadays as I drive down the motorway
Cut through those fields that were there that day
I smile a little 鈥榗os I鈥檓 given to dream
About the day I met Clarke Gable 鈥 when I was only sixteen.
