It was 1941 and my brother(aged 9) and I(aged l3)were on our way home from school. We had to walk about a mile along a country lane with large detached houses on one side and a ditch and fields on the other. We had stopped to stroke a horse over the fence, and then the sirens went, so we started running along this straight road as fast as we could.
We could see our Mother about a hundred yards ahead, who was standing at the front gate, when suddenly there was the sound of a very low aeroplane from behind us, so we turned to look and then saw spots of dust rising from the road coming towards us and the rat-a-tat-tat of a machine gun.
The bullets went straight down the centre of the road about a yard from us as he flew low overhead, so we jumped into the ditch, which was full of stinging nettles, and then ran to our Mother who was still at the gate, screaming.
How he missed all of us I'll never know, but we had stings on our legs for days.
