Lived in Fulham, London and was there during the Blitz (not far from Fulham Power Station - now demolished). Heard the sound of many bombs exploding in the near vicinity, and as as 14/15 year old was very frightened.
Joined the Ordnance Survey in the London Office and was trained as a Cartographer and in early 1943 joined the Royal Air Force. After initial training in Skegness went to the Royal Engineers Training School in Ruabon, North Wales, and was having lunch when the news came over on the 大象传媒 that 'Operation Overlord' had started. Continued my Cartographic Training and was also trained as a Photographic Interpreter. Was posted to the Geographical Section General Staff (GSGS) in Eastcote, Middx. where I was employed drawing bombing targets. In March 1945 I was posted to India and went to the Central Photographic Interpretation Centre in New Delhi. There I was employed on the interpretation of the landing beaches that we intended to use when we invaded Malaya. This continued until the end of the War in the Far East in August 1945. On VJ day I visited the Taj Mahal.
I remained in New Delhi until July 1947 and left about 3 weeks before Ghandi was murdered. During the time after the end of the War until I left we were employed on interpreting photos of Northern India and the passes into Afghanistan. This was a highly secret operation and the approved photos were flown back to the UK, almost immediately. The situation in India was very tense at the time due to the impending 'partion' and we had to have security. I was stoned on a number of occasions.
I think my worst experience was when, as an evacuee in West Byfleet, Surrey, and living on a parade of shops, the shop about three doors away was completely destroyed by a bomb, and we were cringing in a nearby cellar.
