My father's name is Frederick Ladley. He was at Dunkirk and in the evacuation had to swim to safety. He was in the Tank Core and was in the M.E.N newspaper for going behind enemy lines and he saved two men with his Tank. I don't know who else was in the Tank. Any how he got back safely, and the two men.
I have his soldier's books and medals. Just before the end of the war, well 8 months before the end he was shot in the hand with a sniper's bullet and his hand looked withered. he felt he had to hide it when in company. Also he met Montgomery.
His best friend was Larry Spring from Liverpool. Fred came to our house with him and gave me a shell and when you put it in your ear he said you could hear the sea.
When Fred was de-mobbed he had to go to Manchester for a de-mob suit. I was with him and he had to go to each section for Trousers, Jacket etc. Later on he took me to the Art Gallery to see the Queen's Wedding Dress and we queued for a long time.
