My memory of what my parents told us is that they took all the iron railings down from everyone's gardens, outside their back garden and front gardens. They took them off and then they used them for the war and apparently a lot of them were melted down for the weapons factories to be used to make bullets and guns.
They just came and took the Victorian railings, so they were literally here today and gone tomorrow! You didn't get paid for them - it was your duty to the country!
My father in law actually worked in the gun factory in Enfield where maybe they used my parent's railings!
