This story told to Carol Young by her Mother, Gwen Beales, nee Middleton.
As an assistant in Drew’s stationers Regent Street. Swindon, mum participated in Fire watching. Two people from each shop / business joined a group of about 10-12 for all-night fire watching. A room above the cake shop had fold up beds and chairs and if sirens sounded, went in pairs to check their area to see if any incendiary bombs had been dropped. Torches, and (much to mum’s mother's disgust)! navy blue cord trousers were supplied by the shop owner. These were the first pair of trousers mum had worn and evidently on her return from honeymoon in October 1945 my grandmother told her she’d given them to the milkman!
