I remember WW2 being declared. I was old enough to know things would be different. We went on to rationing, but dad was allowed to feed up and kill two pigs a year and we had a cow and poultry, but with 11 to cook for daily we needed them. Also from March to October mum had at least 7 Irishmen to cook and was for so she had her hands full, bless her. She took it all I her stride though. We had two mums and babies commandeer our front room for a while but it was too quiet for them so they left. I won鈥檛 go into details of how they left our room! I remember dad built two air raid shelters as the first one collapsed. We didn鈥檛 use it much, we were lucky really. There were some near misses at times and we had a search light based not too far away. I guess that helped. I remember our meals were plain but good. Our main meal consisted of fat bacon, loads of potatoes and vegetables and a cloth pudding, but on Sundays we had a joint of sirloin, batter pudding, loads of vegetables and potatoes and fruit pie as mum did all the fruit up in Kilner jars to see her through. She also did all her own pickles, chutney, and jams, etc. We had a NFS unit in our yard and dad was in the Home Guard. I went in the NAFFI in 1942 for 18 months I was at Cranwell and it was hard work but I really enjoyed it. It was a great life for a single person. I had to come back to the land work, where I did everything on the land but plough. I worked alongside the men in all jobs in all weathers sheared sheep too.
