My elder brother, Arthur was 17 when the war broke out and had just completed his first years training as an architect. This training was stopped, so my brother decided to go to sea as an apprentice to train to be a sea captain.
In 1941 Arthur was sailing on the SS Clan Buchanan to India, when they were attacked and sunk by a German Raider in the Indian Ocean. The surviving members of the crew were taken on board the raider and later transferred to a German supply vessel.
A few days later this supply vessel was spotted by, I think, H.M.S Norfolk, who attacked and sank this supply vessel, not knowing there were British prisoners on board.
Some of the prisoners did escape, but unfortunately, my brother was not among them.
