There was fine weather as well as bad. There were days of great heat in the monsoon as well as the rain. On those fine days you could wash your socks out in the river and dry them out. What we did was, about a third of the men at a time washed their socks while the rest kept a look out.
The sun was terrifically hot, if you put your hat in the water and put it over your head, the hat would be dry in no time and so would your head. It was very, very hot indeed.
