There was a dogfight going on up in the sky between British and German aircraft.

I saw a German aircraft chasing a Spitfire. They were low enough to see the RAF roundels and German iron cross.

The German chased the Spitfire over Dover Castle and I thought that was that. Oh no. Seconds later the role was reversed. The spit was chasing the German and he was trailing smoke. As the German’s plane turned seaward he bailed out. His parachute opened out.

The Spitfire circled the German and then something happened which I thought we did not do — but it did. The Spitfire started firing at the German. I saw the bullets hit the German and his arms dropped down by his side.

I could not believe my eyes, but I had seen it. The pilot was too far away to see him land.
