During the war (WW2) we lived in Limes Avenue, Pinehurst, every time the sirens sounded Father would walk and trot all the way into the Works to man his tractor, which towed a fire-pump trailer. The thing was, he never learnt to ride a bicycle, but he never failed to turn up, very often he would get to the Works and the all clear would sound, this was about a mile and a half, but he always reported for work on time the next day.
