We had an Anderson shelter at the bottom of the garden. When the Air Raid siren went it was helterskelter down into it, through the curtain, and onto the bottom bunk. It always me on that bunk, and I always ended up on the ground the next morning, having rolled out during the night. One night the doodlebugs came over, and we didn't have time to get to the shelter. So Mum, Aunty Ada, and I sat on the stool in the hallway listening to this whining noise getting closer and closer. Suddenly the noise stopped almost overhead. Mum and Aunty Ada went absolutely still. Then there was a loud "Crump" nearby, and a cracking underneath us, and we went down onto the floor. Mum and Aunty Ada started laughing and laughing because the stool had broken underneath us with all our weight on it. We were fortunate however, as the house that had been behind the house opposite us wasn't there anymore.
