My mum worked on a dairy farm during the war and was given a cottage to live in near Shepton Mallet in Somerset. Because London was being bombed, she got me and my kids and my sister to come down and live there too.
Dad stayed in London for a while but soon decided to join us.

We were expecting my brother to come home on leave from the army so we sent him a telegram that should have read 鈥淢UM AND DAD IN SOMERSET鈥.
Soon after, while mum was at the dairy, there was a knock on the door and there was my brother, earlier than expected, looking distressed. He walked in to the cottage, sat down and all he could say was 鈥淢UM!鈥.

He had got early compassionate leave because the telegram he received from us actually read 鈥淢UM DEAD, DAD IN SOMERSET鈥 He was so relieved to find out mum was still with us. We had saved some whiskey for emergencies and he rightfully deserved it.
