My Grand Aunt Edna was the last relative I had in England and used to send me a parcel for Christmas every year without fail. It was wrapped in Christmas paper, then boxed, then wrapped in brown paper taped down and then tied up with string. It always took me half an hour to open the present which made it all the more fun.

Aunt Edna was in the St John's ambulance for over 50 years. She has passed away now but I have the family bible and her beautiful brooch, presented to her by the St John's ambulance for 50 years dedication with photographs etc.

My Father told me the story of how her hair turned white - not with age, but overnight.

Aunt Edna used to help collect dismembered bodies and put them together again for families to identify and was apparently very good at it.

When the raids were on, she never went wholly into a shelter - she always stayed near the exit. One night a bomb hit a shelter right in the centre and most or all were killed. Covered in blood etc., my Aunt went straight to work, looking for those still alive and then assisting with the dead.

Eventually she got to bed and slept for quite a while. When she woke up and looked in the mirror her hair was completely white. Dad advised me that all she said was that she thought it suited her - and that was that
