During the war it was surprising what you did to make ends meet. I used to make night gowns out of parachute material. I also made cushions out of odds and ends.
I worked in tailoring and so was good with a sewing machine. Anything old and second hand we used to make things out of it, to pass the time and save money.
Another thing we would do to pass the time was visit family. I had ten brothers so there were lots of people I could visit. Sometimes we would go for a drink to the pub. I remember the first air raid hooter, it frightened me very much but it was a false alarm, after that I got used to it.
At Chapel Allerton hospital there were wounded soldiers I also remember that Marsh Lane near Briggate in the city centre was heavily bombed and the Woodpecker public house on New York Road was also bombed.
I remember there was no coffee either during the war.
