A man one day came to tell us,
that from home we must all go.
We'd have to be brave like the soldiers,
and in trains to the country must go.
So we left all our parents behind us,
each one dressed in their best.
Our gas mask most important
and a label pinned to our chest.
Of course there were tears at the station
but adventure took us by the hand,
and into the country we hastened,
this brave evacuee band.
The little ones were crying,
so we cheered them with a song.
We played a game of eye-spy,
'cos the journey seemed so long.
When the train stopped at the station,
we tumbled out to see -
lots of ladies waiting, with buns and milky tea.
