My uncles Jim and Charlie Chandler both had physical disabilities which made them unfit for active service. They were still able to contribute to the war effort by being volunteer firemen in London. The fire-engines were taken out of the depots each night and positioned in strategic places so as to be more available for quick response to any emergency call. My uncles' engine had been assigned to a local school playground. On arriving the school caretaker invited the crew into the school boiler-room for a mug of tea. While they were down there an air-raid took place and when the all clear sounded my uncles emerged to find both their fire-engine and the school playground missing!
