The first thing I remember was the concern about air raids and the steps that mother and father took. My parents went to great lenghts to transport my brothers and mine our beds to under the stairs - thought to be the most secure place. In pratice of course St Albans received no bombs and we were back upstairs in a matter of a few months.
I remember my father joining the home guard around 1940 or 41 and being extraordinarily disapponted when he came back from enrolling that he did n't have a uniform - he remained in civilian dress
