I was in the WAAF during the war, and have to say that they were great days. You had to overcome the inconveniences, get used to not having pillows, and sleeping on straw mattresses.
I remember one night we were based at Polebrooke near Arundel. The order came down that we had to be packed and ready to leave at 5.30 the following morning as the Americans were taking over the base.
Sure enough, next morning we loaded up and got ready to leave. It was very cold.
As we left from one gate, the Americans arrived in another with the white star on the trucks. My friend told me to look at the driver of the first American vehicle. It was Clark Gable. He did stand and wave to us in a very film star sort of way!
