I was 19 when war broke out in 1939, during the entire war I worked for BT in Chester. Me and a friend used to cycle to Chester everyday for work. I recall going to work one morning and when I was near Eccleston a gentleman was stood in the middle of the road telling me that there were unexploded bombs in the field. So I had to find another way to work. On my way home the road was open so me and my friend decided to investigate the field. We started to look around for shrapnel, when a man shouted at us telling us that the bombs had not yet been found. I also remember having blackouts everynight, and using black curtains. I also recall the landgirls that came to Farndon, with many of them staying over to live here after the war. We also had two evacuees staying with us, Mary from Liverpool who stayed for the entire war and her brother. Her brother left us after two days and went back to Liverpool. I remember the Church bells not being rang during the war - the ringing of the bells was a sign of German invasion. Rationing during the war was a nuisance but was helped by us growing our own crops.
