On a lighter note, it was about 1940 and I got myself a job in a pet shop in Liverpool.

I bought myself a lovely pocket watch and was very proud of it. Our family lived in Gainford Road, Liverpool at the time.

That night the air raid sounded and all the family went down the shelter in the back garden.

I joined the others with my new watch in my pocket. Everyone was silent and suddenly one of my older brothers, Charlie, started shouting “everybody out, there’s a time bomb ticking away down here!!”

How we all laughed when we realised it was my new watch ticking away in my pocket!!

The family often joked about that incident over the years!!
