During the 'phoney war' when nothing much happened, there was a big car park down at the back of the house where we lived, for the BAC Aircraft factory which had built quite vastly, and we had loads of fun laughing at them all as they came in and put wire netting all over this big car park, daubed it with some sort of solution and threw feathers at it. These feathers stuck to the solution, and then of course they came along with paint and they camouflaged it. I don't know if it was supposed to look like a forest, or something, but there were feathers everywhere, just drifting about.
And then they started enlisting people for the Home Guard. It was the funniest thing you've ever seen, because they had no uniforms, no weapons, but they were training them to march, stand at ease, present arms and all that sort of thing, but the things they were presenting arms with were broomsticks and brushes and all, anything that looked a bit like a rifle.
And then they'd start to march, one would push the broomstick in the back of the other one, and they'd all burst out laughing, and the old sergeant use to holler at them, and I mean it was funnier than Dad's Army. We used to say, is this all we've got to defund us now? Because they were all ages, young ones who weren't old enough to go in the forces, and some that were well past going into the forces.
