This story was submitted to the Peoples War site by Mary Stenson.
Before the official start of the war we had two evacuations. First we were taken to Southport for one day and the second was to Brecenshire, this was to prepare us for the final evacuation to Herefordshire.
My two younger sisters and I were taken placed with a farm owner Mrs Potter and when my mother came down to visit she agreed to take my baby brother as well.
We had to work on the farm as well as going to school, during the six weeks holidays we started potatoes picking and hay making at 6am.
I remember that when we washed ourselfs we had to use a barrel of collected rain water and dry off on a old four sack.
I went to Newton council school, the teachers were Miss Keelly and Miss Moor. I also acted as an alter boy for the priest who came every Sunday from Herefordshire cathedral. All of the children who attended mass would give 1 penny for the collection.
My family and I all went home 2 years after we were evacuated on 13th May 1942.
