Bish was only four and a half years old when World War Two first started. He never thought about being scared he just thought it was a big adventure. He lived in East London.
Bish got evacuated three times while the war was on. The first time he got evacuated to Hayling Island which he thought was quite enjoyable, because there was no school and there was a beautiful beach to play on. There was only one problem - he got such bad sun-stroke from playing in the sun, his Mum had to come to collect him. The second place he got evacuated to was Axford, he thought that was fantastic. This was because there were tons of things to keep you fit like climbing trees, shooting and chasing animals. His favorite thing to do was to chase the animals, which kept him really fit. He plucked the chickens, milked the cows and even learnt how to kill a chicken and a rabbit with his bare hands. He was really disapointed when he needed to go home. He missed Axford because he missed the animals and getting all the exercise he needed. He liked it at home but then he had to be evacuated for the third time because the bombs had started to go off. For his final evacuation he got sent to Birmingham which he hated. Now this was because his step father already had a son and he was terribly nasty. He liked his step-mum and step-grandmother. One day when Bish was playing out his stepbrother came over to him with a rock and hit him in the eye. This developed into a black eye and he got hit with the strap because his step father thought he had got into a fight with his son. Because of this incident his step-mother wrote a letter to his real Mum asking her to come and collect him and take him back home. Once he was back at home he did not have to be evacuated again.
Now Bish is sixty-nine and he was only four and a half when the war started so I asked him what he thought about life now and life back in the war and these are some of the answers I got. There is more choice of food now, which Bish thinks is not very healthy. There are more types 0f fruit you can get your hands on. In the war at Christmas all you got was two bars of chocolate and a orange. Bish also explained to me that he gets less freedom now to when the war was going on. Next Bish told me about air-raid shelters and one story about a women and her baby. One hot day the alarm went off to tell the English that the Germans were coming to attack. All the people went down to the air-raid shelters for safety. On that day because it was so hot they were allowed to leave their doors open. There was a women feeding her baby when suddenly they all heard a frightening loud bang coming from outside. Then puffs of black smoke filled the air-raid shelter and people were screaming for help. Once the smoke had all gone the woman's baby had vanished. This was because the force of the bomb had carried the baby with it.
Bish was bullied when he was younger because his dad was not in the forces. Bish was upset by this so he joined a sports club.
